New Exploration
Ad-hoc analytics workspace: pivot, slice, and chart any metric across any dimension. For questions canned reports do not cover. Launched from Analytics > Explore.
On this page
New Exploration is the ad-hoc analytics workspace. When the canned reports do not answer your specific question, you build the answer here: pick a metric, slice by one or more dimensions, filter, chart. Save the resulting view as a custom report for reuse.
You'll work at /admin/store/{storeId}/analytics. The New Exploration action lives on the Analytics page.
When to use Exploration vs canned reports
| Question | Use canned report | Use Exploration |
|---|---|---|
| "What's my conversion rate?" | ✅ Conversion Rate Over Time | - |
| "Conversion by traffic source + device in EMEA?" | - | ✅ Exploration with 3 dimensions + filter |
| "Top products this week?" | ✅ Top Products | - |
| "Top products in collection X, by margin, mobile-only?" | - | ✅ Exploration |
| "Sessions over time?" | ✅ Sessions Over Time | - |
| "Sessions over time, segmented by acquisition source, comparing Q1 vs Q2?" | - | ✅ Exploration with cohort comparison |
Generally: canned reports answer the common questions; Exploration answers the specific question you have right now.
Before you begin
- You are signed in to your Tanqory store admin.
- You have View analytics permission. Manage analytics needed to save custom reports.
- You know what question you want to answer.
Steps
1. Open Analytics
The Analytics dashboard renders with KPIs + canned chart panels.
2. Click New Exploration
The action lives in the toolbar of the Analytics dashboard.
3. Pick a metric
The first thing Exploration asks: what number do you want? Sales, sessions, conversion rate, AOV, refund rate, pick one.
4. Add dimensions
Dimensions split the metric. Examples: by date, by source, by device, by country, by product, by segment. Add 1-3 dimensions; more = harder to read.
5. Add filters
Filters narrow the data set before computation. Example: filter to mobile-only, or to specific date range, or to specific collection.
6. Choose a chart type
Tanqory's Exploration supports: line, bar, stacked bar, table, pivot. Choose what answers your question best.
7. Iterate
Adjust dimensions / filters until the chart answers your question. Exploration is meant for iteration.
8. Save as a custom report
If you'll revisit this view: save it under the Custom tab in the Reports catalog. Saved with name + description.
Verify the result
- The chart renders with the chosen metric + dimensions + filters.
- Values match your intuition (spot-check totals).
- Save action persists; the view appears under Custom Reports.
Best practices
- Start with one dimension. Add more only if needed.
- Filter early. Narrow before sliceдimensions for cleaner charts.
- Use the table view for high-precision number-checking before charting.
- Save anything you revisit weekly. Custom Reports compound.
- Document the question in the saved report's description.
Common mistakes
- 3+ dimensions with no clear narrative: chart becomes unreadable.
- No filters: too much data → too much noise.
- Trusting the chart without spot-checking totals.
- Saving without descriptive names: future-you can't find them.
- Building Exploration for questions canned reports already answer: slower than necessary.
If something goes wrong
- Chart empty: verify your date range covers data; verify filters aren't over-narrowing.
- Numbers don't match canned reports: Exploration's exact computation may differ; verify methodology.
- Save fails: your role may lack Manage analytics.
- Permission denied: your role lacks View analytics.
