The Collection Page
A collection has one page where you set everything about it: its name and description, whether it is manual or smart, the products it holds, its search listing, and where it is published. Knowing the sections helps you find what you need quickly. This is the page you edit whenever you change a collection.
On this page
A collection's page is where you set up and change everything about that collection, from its name to how it is published. The page is laid out in sections down the middle, with publishing and appearance settings in a column on the right. You see this page when you create a collection and whenever you open one to edit it. Knowing what each section does helps you go straight to the part you need.
Before you begin
- You have products in your store, since a collection is a group of your products.
- Open Products > Collections, then create a collection or open an existing one.
What the page holds
The main column holds the collection's name, description, type, products, metafields, and search listing. The right column holds publishing, media, the theme template, and tags. A smart collection also shows a Conditions section.
The sections
| Section | What it is |
|---|---|
| Collection name | The collection's name, which is required |
| Description | A description of the collection, written in a rich-text editor |
| Collection type | Whether the collection is Manual or Smart; it cannot be changed after creation |
| Conditions | The rules that automatically add products, shown only for a smart collection |
| Products | The products in the collection, with a control to sort them |
| Metafields | Custom fields you add to the collection through definitions |
| Search engine listing | How the collection appears in search results, shown as a preview you can expand to edit |
| Publishing | Where the collection is published, such as your Online store, with an option to schedule it |
| Collection media | An image or video for the collection |
| Theme template | Which theme template the collection uses on your storefront |
| Tags | Labels you add to the collection |
Name, description, and type
At the top you give the collection a name, which is required, and a description in the rich-text editor. Below them, Collection type sets whether the collection is Manual, where you add products by hand, or Smart, where products are added automatically. The type cannot be changed after the collection is created, so choose it with care.
Products and conditions
The Products section lists the products in the collection and gives you a control to sort them. On a smart collection, a Conditions section above it holds the rules that decide which products are added, and the Products list fills from those rules. Setting these rules is covered in Set Conditions on a Smart Collection.
Publishing and appearance
In the right column, Publishing controls where the collection is available, such as your Online store, and lets you schedule when it is published. Collection media holds an image or video for the collection, and Theme template chooses which storefront template it uses. Tags lets you add labels to the collection.
Saving
When the sections are set the way you want, select Save at the top to keep your changes, or Discard to drop them. The collection then reflects what you set, on your admin and, once published, on your storefront.
Best practices
- Name the collection for shoppers. Use a clear name, since it is what customers see.
- Pick the type deliberately. The type cannot change later, so choose Manual or Smart based on how the collection should fill.
- Add a description and media. A description and an image give the collection page something to show on your storefront.
- Check publishing before you rely on it. Confirm the collection is published where you expect it, or schedule it for later.
If something goes wrong
- You cannot save. Make sure the required Collection name is filled, then select Save.
- There is no Conditions section. Conditions appear only on a smart collection; a manual collection has none.
- The collection is not on your storefront. Check Publishing, since it may be unpublished or scheduled for later.
- You cannot edit the collection. Your role may not allow managing products. Ask an owner or admin.
