Checking a Discount Before It Goes Live
Tanqory does not have a preview that runs a discount against a sample cart. To check a discount before it applies to real orders, read the Summary Details list to confirm its rules, and place a test order at checkout. This article covers both checks.
On this page
There is no preview in Tanqory that runs a discount against a sample cart and shows the result without activating it. To make sure a discount is set up correctly before it affects real orders, you have two checks: read the discount's own summary of its rules, and place a test order at checkout. Together they let you confirm the discount does what you intend before customers use it.
The first check is on the discount itself. The Summary panel's Details list restates the discount's rules in plain language, such as the value, what it applies to, who is eligible, any minimum requirement, whether it combines, and when it is active. Reading this before the discount goes live catches a wrong setting without needing a preview tool. The second check is a real order: place a test order that should get the discount and confirm the price changes as expected. Discount Detail Page covers the Summary panel.
Two ways to check
| Check | What it confirms |
|---|---|
| Read the Summary Details list | That the discount's rules are set the way you intend, in plain language |
| Place a test order at checkout | That the discount applies and the price changes as expected on a real order |
Before you begin
- Your role includes Edit discounts.
- Open Discounts in the admin sidebar and open the discount you want to work on.
Steps
1. Read the discount's Details before it goes live
Open the discount and read the Details list in the Summary panel. Check that the value, what it applies to, the eligibility, the requirements, the combinations, and the active dates match what you intend. Reading this first catches a wrong setting before the discount is live. See Discount Detail Page.
2. Schedule the discount to start later if you want time to check
If you want to check before the discount applies, set its start date in the future so it stays Scheduled until then. While it is Scheduled it does not apply, which gives you time to review it. See Schedule Discounts.
3. Place a test order at checkout
Once the discount is active, place a test order that should receive it. For a code, enter the code at checkout; for an automatic discount, build a qualifying cart. Confirm the price changes as expected, then place an order that should not qualify and confirm the discount does not apply. This is how you check the discount on a real order in place of a preview.
Verify the result
- The Summary Details list matches the rules you intended.
- A qualifying test order gets the discount and the price changes as expected.
- An order that should not qualify does not get the discount.
Best practices
- Read the Details list before a discount goes live, since it is the quickest way to catch a wrong setting.
- Schedule a new discount to start a little later if you want time to review it before it applies.
- Test both an order that qualifies and one that does not, so you confirm the discount applies only where it should.
Common mistakes
- Expecting a preview against a sample cart, when Tanqory does not have one; use the Details list and a test order instead.
- Activating without reading the Details, so a wrong setting reaches customers before you notice.
If something goes wrong
- A test order did not get the discount. Check the discount is active and within its dates, and that the order meets its rules.
- The Details do not match what you intended. Open the matching section on the discount and change it.
- You cannot edit the discount. Your role may not have permission to manage discounts.
