A Discount's Rules
A discount does not have a single Rules section. Its rules are the form sections on the discount page, such as what it applies to, who is eligible, requirements, limits, combinations, and dates, and the Summary panel's Details list restates all of them in plain language. This companion explains where the rules live and links to each one.
On this page
A discount's rules are the settings that decide what it does and who can use it, and on the discount page they are not gathered under one section called Rules. Instead, each rule is its own section on the form: Discount value, Applies to, Eligibility, Purchase requirements, Usage limits, Combinations, and Active dates. You change a rule by editing its section. Discount Detail Page covers the whole discount page.
To read the rules in one place without going through each section, use the Details list in the Summary panel on the right. It restates the discount's rules in plain language, for example the value, what it applies to, the eligibility, whether there is a minimum requirement, whether it combines with other discounts, and when it is active. So the form sections are where you set the rules, and the Details list is where you read them back.
Where each rule lives
| Rule | Section on the form | Article |
|---|---|---|
| The value | Discount value | Discount Types |
| What it applies to | Applies to | Limit a Discount to Specific Products |
| Who can use it | Eligibility | Apply a Discount to a Customer Segment |
| Minimum requirement | Purchase requirements | Create a Discount Code |
| How many times it can be used | Usage limits | Discount Usage Limits |
| Whether it stacks | Combinations | Configure Discount Combinations |
| When it runs | Active dates | Schedule Discounts |
Before you begin
- Your role includes Edit discounts.
- Open Discounts in the admin sidebar and open the discount you want to work on.
Steps
1. Read the rules in the Summary Details list
Open the discount and read the Details list in the Summary panel to see its rules in plain language, without opening each section. This gives you the full picture of the discount in one place. See Discount Detail Page.
2. Change a rule in its section
To change a rule, edit its section on the form, such as Applies to for the products it covers or Active dates for when it runs, then save. Because each rule is a separate section, you change only the part you need without affecting the others.
Verify the result
- The Summary Details list restates the discount's rules in plain language.
- After you change a section, the Details list updates to match.
- There is no separate section named Rules; the rules are the form sections and the Details summary.
Best practices
- Read the Details list first, so you understand the discount before you change a section.
- Change one section at a time, so you can see the effect of each change in the Details list.
- Open the linked article for a section when you want the full explanation of that rule.
Common mistakes
- Looking for a single Rules section, when the rules are spread across the form sections and summarized in the Details list.
- Editing a section without reading the Details first, so a change has an effect you did not expect.
If something goes wrong
- A rule is not what you expected. Read the Details list, then open the matching section to change it.
- A change did not show. Confirm you saved, then check the Details list.
- You cannot edit the discount. Your role may not have permission to manage discounts.
