Print an Order
From the Print button on an order you can print two documents: the order itself, as a summary for your records or the customer, and the packing slip that goes inside the parcel. Choosing either one opens your browser's print dialog, where you can print it or save it as a PDF. This article explains the two Print options and how printing works.
On this page
The Print button on an order lets you print a paper copy of the order or of its packing slip. You use it when you want a summary of the order for your records or the customer, or the slip that goes inside the parcel. Choosing what to print opens your browser's own print dialog, where you print it or save it as a PDF. This article explains the two options and how printing works.
You find the Print button among the actions at the top of the order, reached from Orders.
Before you begin
- Your role includes View orders.
- A printer is set up, or you are happy to save the document as a PDF instead.
- Open Orders in the admin sidebar and open the order you want to work on.
The Print menu
Selecting Print opens a short menu with two choices: Print order and Print packing slip. Choose the one you need, and your browser's print dialog opens for that document.
Print order
Print order produces a printable copy of the order itself, as a summary you can keep for your records or hand to the customer. Reach for it when the paper has to answer "what was this order", for example a copy filed with your accounts, a document a customer asked for after the fact, or a print-out to work from while you check an order against a delivery.
It is the wrong choice for the parcel, because a customer-facing summary is not what a packer needs while filling a box.
Print packing slip
Print packing slip produces the packing slip, the document that goes inside the parcel so whoever packs it and whoever receives it can both check the contents. Reach for it when you are preparing the shipment.
If you are packing several orders in one session, printing slips one order at a time is slow. Select the orders on the list and print the whole batch at once instead, which is covered in Print Packing Slips in Bulk. The slip itself is described in Packing Slips.
How printing works
Choosing either option opens your browser's own print dialog. From there you send it to a printer, or save it as a PDF instead of printing on paper. The dialog belongs to your browser rather than to Tanqory, so its options, and where they sit, depend on the browser and the computer you are using.
Two consequences follow from that. Settings such as paper size, margins, and whether background colours print are your browser's, not the store's, so a slip that comes out wrong is usually fixed there. Printing changes nothing about the order: no status moves, nothing is sent to the customer, and you can print the same document as often as you like.
Verify the result
- The print dialog shows the document you meant: the order summary, or the packing slip.
- The order itself is unchanged, since printing is a read-only action.
- If you saved a PDF, open it and check the last page, so you know the whole document was written.
Best practices
- Print the packing slip for the parcel and the order for your records, since they are meant for different purposes.
- Save as a PDF from the print dialog when you want a digital copy rather than paper.
- Check the order is correct before printing, so the printed copy matches what you ship.
Common mistakes
- Printing the order when you meant the packing slip, or the other way around, since they are two separate documents.
- Looking for the Print options elsewhere, when they are on the Print button at the top of the order.
- Printing one slip at a time for a batch of orders, when the list can print them all in one pass.
- Printing before the order is final, so the paper no longer matches what you ship after an edit.
If something goes wrong
- No print dialog opens. Your browser is blocking it. Allow pop-ups for the admin, then select the option again.
- The document is cut off or the layout is wrong. Adjust the paper size, the scale, or the margins in the browser's print dialog, since the layout is produced there.
- You printed the wrong document. Nothing was changed on the order, so choose the other option from the Print menu and print again.
- The Print button is not on the order. Check you are on the order itself rather than the orders list, where printing is a bulk action instead.
