Product Templates
Assign a theme template to a product so its storefront page uses a different layout than the default, when your theme provides more than one template.
On this page
Every product page is rendered by a theme template. By default a product uses the Default product template, but if your current theme includes more than one product template you can assign a different one to a specific product so it renders with a different storefront layout.
You set this in the Theme template field in the right column of the product editor.
You'll work under Products in the admin sidebar, on the product you want to change.
What the Theme template field does
The field reads Assign a template from your current theme to define how the product page is rendered, with a dropdown that defaults to Default product. The dropdown only lists the product templates your current theme actually provides. If the theme ships a single product template, Default product is the only choice you see, so the field gives you options once the theme adds more.
Before you begin
- You have the Edit products permission.
- Your current theme provides more than one product template. If it ships only the default, the dropdown shows just Default product.
- Open Products in the admin sidebar and open the product whose template you want to change.
Steps
1. Open the product
Open the product you want from Products in the admin sidebar.
2. Find the Theme template field
Scroll to the Theme template field in the right column of the editor. It shows the heading, a short description of what the field does, and a dropdown set to Default product.
3. Pick a template
Open the dropdown and choose the template you want this product to use. The list comes from your current theme. If the theme provides only one product template, you will see just Default product.
4. Save
Click Save in the unsaved-changes bar at the top of the editor.
5. Check the storefront
Open the product page on your storefront and confirm it renders with the layout you expect from the template you picked.
Verify the result
- The product page on the storefront uses the layout from the template you selected.
- The page renders correctly on both mobile and desktop.
Best practices
- Assign a non-default template only to products that genuinely need a different layout.
- Keep the number of custom templates small so the theme stays easy to maintain.
- After a theme update, check that the product still points to a template that exists.
Common mistakes
- Expecting a choice when the theme provides only the default. The dropdown shows just Default product until the theme adds more templates.
- Assigning a template, then forgetting to save, so the storefront keeps the old layout.
- Picking a template built for a different kind of product, so the page sections look out of place.
If something goes wrong
- Only Default product is listed. Your theme has a single product template. Add more templates to the theme before you can assign them here.
- The page looks wrong after assigning. The template may be built for a different product type. Switch back to Default product or pick a more suitable one, then save.
- Permission denied. Your role lacks the Edit products permission.
