Global Tax Settings
Store-wide tax configuration that defaults all regional setups: display mode (inclusive / exclusive), default registration data, default tax service.
On this page
Global Tax Settings is where you configure store-wide tax defaults that apply across all regions. Distinct from per-region rates: per-region handles "how much" (the rate); global handles "how" (display mode, registration data, tax service connection).
You'll work at /admin/store/{storeId}/settings/taxes: the global section sits at the top of the page.
What's controlled here
| Setting | What it does | Default |
|---|---|---|
| Display mode | Tax-inclusive vs tax-exclusive | Tax-exclusive (US default) |
| Default registration data | Your tax IDs for the registered jurisdictions | None |
| Tax service connection | Avalara / TaxJar / built-in | Built-in |
| Default origin | Where tax-nexus is based (your warehouse) | Primary location |
| Behavior on missing region | Block checkout or apply 0% | 0% (configurable) |
Before you begin
- You are signed in to your Tanqory store admin.
- You have Manage settings permission.
- You have decided your tax strategy (consult accountant).
Steps
1. Open Settings > Taxes
The Taxes page renders.
2. Set display mode
- Tax-inclusive (
$107) for EU / UK / AU / NZ / many APAC. - Tax-exclusive (
$100 + tax) for US / Canada.
This is the default; per-region can override.
3. Enter your tax registrations
Tax IDs for each jurisdiction where you have nexus + are registered. Tanqory uses these on invoices + for B2B reverse-charge eligibility (EU).
4. Connect a tax calculation service (recommended for complex setups)
For multi-state US: Avalara or TaxJar. For global VAT: Avalara or similar. For simple single-region: built-in is fine.
5. Set default origin location
The fulfillment location that determines your tax nexus by default.
6. Set behavior on missing region
If a customer ships to a region you haven't configured:
- Block checkout (force you to configure).
- Apply 0% tax (risk of under-collection).
Default to 0% with notification, then configure quickly.
7. Save the global settings
8. Configure per-region rates
After global, configure each region's rate. See Tax Regions.
Verify the result
- Display mode reflects on test orders.
- Tax IDs appear on test invoices.
- Tax service computes rates (if connected).
- Default origin handles unmapped destinations.
Best practices
- Pick display mode based on market expectation.
- Use a tax service for multi-region complexity.
- Keep tax IDs current: outdated breaks invoicing.
- Test thoroughly before launch.
- Engage an accountant: DIY tax is risky.
Common mistakes
- Wrong display mode for market.
- No tax service for multi-state US: manual rates drift.
- Stale tax IDs.
- Block-checkout on missing region: kills international sales.
- Skipping accountant consultation.
If something goes wrong
- Tax not appearing: verify region; verify global behavior on missing region.
- Wrong display mode: review global + per-region overrides.
- Tax service errors: verify API credentials.
- Permission denied: your role lacks Manage settings.
