Taxes and Duties
Configure how Tanqory calculates sales tax / VAT / GST + cross-border duties + import taxes. Critical for compliance + customer trust.
On this page
Taxes and duties in Tanqory split into two concerns: taxes (sales tax, VAT, GST, collected at checkout, remitted to the local tax authority) and duties / import taxes (charged at the border on cross-border shipments, typically paid by the recipient unless you absorb them).
You'll work at /admin/store/{storeId}/settings/taxes and /admin/store/{storeId}/settings/markets for cross-border duty configuration.
Taxes vs Duties
| Concept | When charged | Paid by | Collected by |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sales tax / VAT / GST | At checkout | Customer (added to subtotal) | You: remit to local tax authority |
| Duties / import tax | At customs border | Recipient (typically) or you (if absorbed) | Carrier (DHL / FedEx / etc.) collects, remits to govt |
Before you begin
- You are signed in to your Tanqory store admin.
- You have Manage settings permission. Owner may be required for tax-region changes.
- You have tax registrations in your nexus jurisdictions.
- You have an accountant or tax adviser for confirmation.
Steps
1. Open Settings > Taxes
Configure sales tax / VAT / GST per region.
2. Configure per-region tax rates
See Tax Settings for the detail.
3. Decide tax-inclusive vs exclusive display
EU-facing stores typically show tax-inclusive ("$107 inc. VAT"); US stores typically show tax-exclusive ("$100 + tax at checkout").
4. (Optional) Configure cross-border duties
For stores shipping internationally: decide whether duties are
- Paid by recipient (DDU): default; customer pays at door.
- Paid by you (DDP): absorbed in your prices.
DDP improves customer experience but reduces margin.
5. (Optional) Connect a tax calculation service
For complex US sales-tax / global VAT compliance: connect Avalara, TaxJar, or similar. Auto-calculates correct rates per jurisdiction.
6. Test orders from each tax region
Verify the calculation is correct via test orders.
7. Reconcile against the Tax Report monthly
The Tax Report shows what was collected. Reconcile against what was filed.
Verify the result
- Tax appears on test orders at the correct rate.
- Tax-inclusive vs exclusive display matches your configuration.
- Cross-border orders show duty handling per your policy.
- Tax Report data matches your filings.
Best practices
- Get an accountant. Tax errors compound expensively.
- Use a tax service (Avalara / TaxJar) for multi-state US.
- Audit nexus quarterly as you scale.
- Communicate duty policy clearly at checkout for cross-border.
- Reconcile Tax Report against filings monthly.
Common mistakes
- Wrong display model for market: EU customers confused by tax-exclusive.
- Missing nexus states: under-collection.
- No customs / HS codes on products: international shipments delayed.
- DDP without communicating to customer: pricing surprise.
- No tax service for complex setups: manual rates drift.
If something goes wrong
- Tax not appearing: verify region configuration.
- Wrong amount: verify rate + product / customer exemption.
- Duty issues at customs: verify product HS code + country of origin.
- Permission denied: your role lacks Manage settings.
