Set Up a Pixel
A pixel reports what shoppers do on your store to an advertising or analytics platform, so it can measure the sales your campaigns produce. This walks adding one from the Customer events page, choosing between a ready-made pixel app and your own custom pixel, and confirming it is collecting events.
On this page
A pixel is the piece of tracking that lets an outside service see what happens on your store after someone clicks an ad, which is what makes advertising measurable. You add and manage pixels on the Customer events page, and there are two ways to add one: install a ready-made pixel app, or add your own custom pixel code. This article walks that setup and how to confirm the pixel is working. Customer Events and Pixels explains what customer events are and how they feed your reporting.
Before you begin
Decide these before you open the page, so the setup does not stop halfway.
- Go to Settings > Customer events in the admin sidebar, where pixels are added and managed.
- Decide which platform to collect events for, since each pixel connects to one.
- Choose a ready-made pixel app or your own custom pixel code. The custom route can require a higher plan.
- Have what that route needs: access to the platform account for an app, or your tracking code from a source you trust for a custom pixel.
Add a pixel
On the Customer events page, the Pixels section shows the pixels on your store, and reads No pixels yet until you add one, with the two ways to add a pixel below the note.
- Choose an app pixel or a custom pixel. Select Explore pixel apps to find and install an app that connects a platform's pixel for you, or Add custom pixel to add your own tracking code. The custom route can require a higher plan, so if it is not available Tanqory shows an upgrade prompt in place of the editor.
- Install an app pixel. If you chose Explore pixel apps, install the app for your platform and follow its own setup, which connects its pixel to your store, so you end up with a working pixel without touching any code.
- Or add a custom pixel. If you chose Add custom pixel and your plan includes it, paste your tracking code into the custom pixel editor and save. Only add code from a source you trust, since a pixel runs on your storefront and can see what customers do.
- Confirm the pixel is collecting events. Using the platform's own tools, such as its events manager or a pixel helper, confirm events are arriving. When views and purchases appear from your store, the pixel is working and your campaign reports and audiences start to fill with real data.
Tip: A pixel that is installed but never fires collects nothing. Always confirm it is sending events before you rely on its numbers to judge a campaign, so you are acting on real data rather than an empty pixel.
Verify the result
- The pixel appears in the Pixels section instead of the No pixels yet state.
- The platform's events tool shows events arriving from your store.
- Key actions such as viewing a product and completing a purchase show up as separate events.
Best practices
- Add a pixel for a platform before you start spending on it, so it measures results from the first click.
- Prefer a pixel app over pasting code whenever one exists, since it connects the platform with less chance of a mistake.
- Add custom pixel code only from a source you trust, because it runs on your storefront and can read customer activity.
- Confirm a new pixel is firing before you use its numbers to decide where to spend.
