How Combining Discounts Works
Combining lets a discount apply on the same order as another discount. Tanqory groups discounts into product, order, and shipping, and a discount can be set to combine with any of these. This companion explains what stacking means, and links to the full setup.

Combining is what lets more than one discount apply to the same order. By default a discount does not combine with any other, so a customer gets one discount at a time. When you allow a combination, two discounts apply together and the order is reduced by both, which is why the setting is worth thinking through before you turn it on. This article explains how combining works; and Configure Discount Combinations covers the controls and the steps.
Tanqory sorts discounts into three kinds: product discounts, order discounts, and shipping discounts. On any discount, the Combinations section lets you allow it to combine with each of those kinds. So a code that takes an amount off products can be set to combine with a shipping discount, letting a customer use the code and get free shipping on the same order, while still not combining with another product discount.
The three kinds of discount
| Kind | What it discounts |
|---|---|
| Product discounts | Discounts on products or collections |
| Order discounts | Discounts on the whole order total |
| Shipping discounts | Discounts on shipping, such as free shipping |
Before you begin
- Your role includes Edit discounts.
- You know whether the discount is meant to be used on its own or together with another.
- Open Discounts in the admin sidebar, then create a discount or open an existing one, since this section is part of every discount form.
Steps
1. Decide whether the discount should stack
Decide whether this discount should ever apply at the same time as another. If it should stand alone, leave its combinations off, which is the default. If it should stack, decide which kinds it should combine with. See Configure Discount Combinations.
2. Allow only the kinds you intend
In the discount's Combinations section, turn on only the kinds you want it to combine with, such as allowing a product discount to combine with a shipping discount. Turning on a kind means this discount can stack with a discount of that kind, so the order is reduced by both.
3. Test the stacked result
Build a cart that would trigger this discount and another one you allowed it to combine with, and confirm the total is what you expect. Testing before the discount goes live keeps a combination from reducing an order more than you meant.
Verify the result
- Discounts you allowed to combine apply together, and the total reflects both.
- Discounts you did not allow to combine do not stack, so only one applies.
- With all combinations off, the discount applies on its own.
Best practices
- Leave combinations off unless you have a reason to stack, since two discounts on one order reduce it by both amounts.
- A common choice is to allow shipping only, so a discount can pair with free shipping but not with another product or order discount.
- Set the combinations on both discounts that you want to stack, so each allows the other.
Common mistakes
- Allowing every kind without checking the result, so discounts stack and cut the order more than planned.
- Forgetting an automatic discount can stack with a code, so check the combinations on your automatic discounts too.
If something goes wrong
- Two discounts stacked when you did not expect it. Check the Combinations settings on both discounts.
- A discount will not stack with another. Confirm the matching kind is turned on for the discount.
- You cannot edit the discount. Your role may not have permission to manage discounts.
