In progress is the fulfillment status for orders you have started to pack but not yet shipped, so the team can see which orders are being worked on. On the Orders list you can set this status for several orders at once by selecting them and choosing In progress from the Mark as menu and confirming in a short window. This is handy when you take a batch of orders to work through together. This article walks through it.
You do this on the Orders list, reached from Orders.
The bulk action bar
Selecting one or more orders on the list shows a bulk action bar along the top with actions that apply to all the selected orders. The Mark as menu on that bar sets the fulfillment status, and sits alongside Print, Create shipping labels, and Capture payment.
The Mark as menu lists Unfulfilled, In progress, Mark as fulfilled, Delivered, and On hold. Choosing In progress sets that status on every selected order.
Before you begin
- Your role includes Edit orders.
- Open Orders and select the orders you have started to work on.
Steps
1. Open the Orders list
Go to Orders to open the list of orders.
2. Select the orders
Tick the checkbox at the start of each order's row (1) to select it. The checkbox in the header row selects every order on the page at once. As soon as one order is selected, the bulk action bar appears.
3. Open the Mark as menu
In the bulk action bar, select Mark as. A menu opens with the fulfillment statuses.
4. Choose In progress
Select In progress (2). A confirmation window opens.
5. Confirm in the window
The window reads Mark N orders as in progress and notes that the fulfillment will be marked as in progress. Select Mark as in progress to confirm, or Cancel to stop.
What happens when you confirm
Each selected order moves to the In progress status. Unlike the Mark as fulfilled window, this window has no customer-notification option, so it does not offer to email the customer; it changes only the fulfillment status so the order shows as being worked on.
When to use In progress
In progress sits between Unfulfilled and Fulfilled. Set it when you have started packing an order but it has not shipped yet, so the order is not mixed in with ones you have not touched. When the order ships, move it on to Fulfilled.
Best practices
- Mark orders in progress when you start them, so the team can see what is being worked on.
- Move orders on to Fulfilled once they ship, rather than leaving them in progress.
- Select only the orders you are actually working, so the status stays meaningful.
Common mistakes
- Leaving orders in progress after they ship, so they never reach Fulfilled and the customer is not updated.
- Selecting the wrong orders, for example marking orders in progress that you have not started.
- Using the header checkbox by mistake, which selects every order on the page.
