Order Customer Section
The Customer card on an order shows who the order is for, with their contact information and their shipping and billing addresses, and it is where you attach a customer or edit those details.
On this page
The Customer card in the right column of an order shows who the order is for. It holds the customer's contact information and the addresses you ship to and bill, and it is where you attach a customer to the order or correct any of those details. This article explains each part of the card and what you can do from it.
You find this card in the right column when you open an order under Orders.
Before you begin
- Your role includes View orders.
- Open Orders in the admin sidebar and open the order you want to work on.
The Customer card
The card is headed Customer with a more-options menu on the right. Below the heading is a Search or create customer field for attaching a customer, and then three labeled sections: Contact information, Shipping address, and Billing address. When no customer is attached, these sections read as empty, with lines such as No email provided and No shipping address provided.
Contact information
The Contact information section shows how to reach the customer: their email address and their phone number. The email is a link you can click to start an email. When a detail has not been given, the card says so, such as No phone number provided, so you can tell what is missing rather than wondering.
Shipping and billing addresses
The card shows two addresses, each with the customer's name and full address.
- Shipping address is where the order is sent. Check it before you fulfill the order, since a wrong address is a common cause of a lost delivery.
- Billing address is the address on record for payment. It often matches the shipping address but can differ, for example for a gift or a business purchase.
Attaching or editing the customer
The card is also where you set who the order is for.
- Search or create customer lets you attach an existing customer by searching for them, or add a new one, when the order has no customer yet.
- The more-options menu at the top right of the card opens Edit contact information, Edit shipping address, and Edit billing address, so you can correct the email, phone, or either address without leaving the order.
Best practices
- Confirm the shipping address before you fulfill, so the package goes to the right place.
- Keep the email correct, since order confirmations and shipping updates are sent to it.
- Check the billing address when it matters, for example on a business order that needs an invoice to a company address.
Common mistakes
- Fulfilling before checking the shipping address, which sends the order to an old or wrong address.
- Assuming billing and shipping are the same, when the customer meant them to differ.
- Leaving the customer off the order, so there is no contact address for confirmations and updates.
