Before you begin
- Your role includes General settings.
- Open Settings > Notifications in the admin sidebar. Open Customer notifications, then the template you want to edit.
Edit a customer notification template
From the admin, open Settings, then Notifications, then Customer notifications, and select the template you want to edit. This example opens Order confirmation. The editor shows the template's controls across the top, its Email subject, and an Email body preview below.
- Edit the email subject. The Email subject is the line customers see in their inbox, and it can include placeholders. On the Order confirmation template it reads "Order" followed by the order-number placeholder and the word "confirmed", so each email names the order. A subject that names the order like this is easy for customers to recognize in a busy inbox.
- Edit the email body. Below the subject, the Email body shows a live preview of the email. The Order confirmation default includes a greeting to the customer by first name, an order-details block with the order number and date, an order summary with the line items, subtotal, shipping, taxes, and total, and the shipping address, all built from placeholders. Edit the wording so the message reads in your brand's voice.
- Change the content. Use the buttons across the top to shape the email. Reset to Default returns the template to the standard version if a change goes wrong. Generate with AI drafts the content for you as a starting point. Edit Code opens the template's underlying code so you can adjust the layout and wording directly. Keep the placeholders in place so each email still carries the right order's details.
- Send a test. Before you rely on the template, select Send Test Email to send yourself a copy and confirm the subject and body read clearly and render correctly. Checking a test first means a real customer never receives a broken or confusing email.
Best practices
- Send a test before you rely on it. A test copy shows exactly what a customer will receive, so you catch problems before a real order does.
- Keep the placeholders intact. They fill in each order's number, customer name, totals, and address, so removing them loses that detail.
- Keep a consistent voice across templates. Edit each one so all your customer emails read as one brand.
- Reset if a change goes wrong. Reset to Default brings back the standard template so you can start over.
If something goes wrong
- A placeholder shows as plain text in a real email. The placeholder syntax was likely broken. Use Edit Code to fix it, or Reset to Default to restore the template.
- The test email does not arrive. Check that your sender email is set up on the Notifications page, then try Send Test Email again.
- You cannot edit the template. Your role may not allow managing settings. Ask an owner or admin.
