Buy X Get Y Discounts
A Buy X Get Y discount gives a customer a discount on one set of items when they buy another set. You set what the customer buys, what they get, and how the items they get are discounted, including the option to make them free.
On this page
A Buy X Get Y discount rewards a customer for buying one set of items by discounting another set, for example buy two of a product and get a third at a reduced price or free. You create it like other discounts, but the form has two parts: Customer buys, which sets the items and quantity that trigger the offer, and Customer gets, which sets the items the customer receives and how they are discounted. It can be a code customers enter or an automatic discount.
What you set
| Part | What it controls |
|---|---|
| Customer buys | The trigger: a Minimum quantity of items or Minimum purchase amount, the quantity, and which products or collections it applies to |
| Customer gets | The reward: the quantity, which products or collections the customer gets, and the discount on them |
| At a discounted value | How the reward items are discounted: Percentage off each item, Amount off each item, or Free |
Before you begin
- Your role includes Edit discounts.
- You know which items trigger the offer and which items the customer gets.
- Open Discounts in the admin sidebar, then select Create discount.
Steps
1. Open Discounts and choose Buy X get Y
Open Discounts, click Create discount, and in the Select discount type dialog choose Buy X get Y. See Discounts Overview.
2. Choose the method
At the top of the form, set Method to Discount code and enter or generate a code, or set it to Automatic discount and give it a title. See Create a Discount Code and Automatic Discounts.
3. Set what the customer buys and what they get
Under Customer buys, choose Minimum quantity of items or Minimum purchase amount, set the Quantity, and use Any items from to choose Specific products or Specific collections. Under Customer gets, set the Quantity and the items the customer receives, then under At a discounted value choose Percentage off each item, Amount off each item, or Free. Turn on Set a maximum number of uses per order to cap how many times the reward applies in a single order.
4. Set who can use it
Under Eligibility, choose All customers, Markets, Specific customer segments, or Specific customers. See Apply a Discount to a Customer Segment.
5. Set usage limits and combinations
Under Usage limits, optionally cap total uses or limit one use per customer. Under Combinations, choose whether this offer can combine with Product, Order, or Shipping discounts.
6. Set the active dates
Under Active dates, set the Start date and Start time, and turn on Set end date if the offer should stop on a certain day. See Schedule Discounts.
7. Save, then test
Save the discount. Build a cart that meets the Customer buys condition and includes a Customer gets item, and confirm the reward is discounted. Build a cart that only meets one side and confirm the discount does not apply.
Verify the result
- The discount appears in the Discounts table with the type Buy X get Y.
- A cart that meets the buy condition and includes a get item shows the reward discounted.
- A cart that meets only one side does not trigger the discount.
Best practices
- Limit the Customer gets items to specific products, so the reward is the item you intend rather than the most expensive one in the cart.
- Use Set a maximum number of uses per order so the reward does not repeat more than you want in one order.
- Match the quantities to the offer, for example buy two and get one, so the rule reads the way customers expect.
- Give the offer an end date so it does not run past the campaign.
Common mistakes
- Leaving the Customer gets items open, so customers receive a more valuable item than intended.
- No maximum uses per order, so the reward repeats across a large cart.
- Setting only the buy side or only the get side, so the discount never triggers.
If something goes wrong
- The discount does not apply. Confirm the cart meets the Customer buys condition and contains a Customer gets item, and that the discount is Active.
- The reward is larger than expected. Check the Customer gets items and the maximum uses per order.
- You cannot create a discount. Your role may not have permission to manage discounts.
