How Order Actions Confirm
Choosing an action on an order does not happen instantly. Most actions open their own screen where you review the details and confirm before anything changes, so you always get a checkpoint. A few actions open a small menu instead, and the ones that remove something, such as deleting an order, are marked so they stand out. This reference explains what to expect when you use an order action and where each kind of action takes you.
On this page
Choosing an action on an order does not change it straight away. Instead the action opens its own screen where you review the details and confirm, so you always get a checkpoint before anything happens. This article explains that pattern, so you know what to expect when you use an action from the Order Actions Menu, and where each kind of action takes you.
Before you begin
- Your role includes Edit orders.
- You have the action open. Each dialog described here is reached from the buttons at the top of an order.
- Open Orders in the admin sidebar and open the order you want to work on.
Most actions open their own screen
Most order actions open a dedicated screen for that action rather than acting on the spot. For example, Refund opens a Refund screen where you set the amount before any money moves, and processing a return opens the Process return screen where you set the restock and the refund. You review and confirm on that screen, and the order does not change until you complete it. This gives you a chance to check the details first.
A few actions open a small menu instead
Not every action opens a full screen. Print opens a small menu so you can choose between Print order and Print packing slip, and then the document opens. These are quick choices rather than screens to fill in.
Destructive actions are flagged
Some actions remove or undo something, and these are marked so they stand out. In the More actions menu, Delete order is shown in red because it removes the order. Treat an action like this with extra care, and make sure you are on the right order before you finish it.
You can back out before you commit
Because each action opens its own screen or menu first, nothing is final until you complete it. If you open an action and change your mind, leave the screen or choose Cancel, and the order stays exactly as it was.
Best practices
- Read the screen before you confirm, since it shows what the action will do and to which order.
- Check the order number at the top before finishing an action, so you act on the order you meant to.
- Do not assume an action is instant. It opens a screen or a menu first, which is your chance to review or back out.
Common mistakes
- Confirming without reading the screen, and so refunding or changing more than you intended.
- Acting on the wrong order because you did not check the order number first.
- Treating Delete order like an ordinary action, when it removes the order and is marked in red for that reason.
