Bringing Past Orders into Tanqory
Tanqory has no order importer: the Orders page offers Export but not Import, so a CSV of past orders cannot be uploaded. This article explains what that means for a migration, the two ways orders really arrive in your store, and how to keep your old order history available for reference and reporting.
On this page
There is no order importer in the Tanqory admin. The Orders page has an Export action for getting your orders out as a file, and no matching Import, so a CSV of past orders from another platform cannot be uploaded into Orders the way a product CSV can be uploaded into Products.
This matters most during a migration, where it is easy to assume every record type moves the same way. Products, inventory, and customers each have their own importer. Orders do not, so past orders stay where they were made, and Tanqory's order history starts with the orders your store takes from the day you open it.
How orders actually arrive
Only two things create an order in Tanqory.
- A customer checks out on your storefront. This is the normal path, and it creates the order, its payment record, and its fulfillment work as one piece.
- You create a draft order by hand. A draft is the manual route, meant for a sale taken over the phone, by email, or in person. See When to Use a Draft Order and Create a Draft Order.
A draft order is the closest thing to entering an order yourself, and it is the right tool for a handful of orders you genuinely need to exist in Tanqory, such as a sale agreed before you switched over. It is not a practical way to load a year of history, because each one is built by hand.
What to do with your old order history
Keep it where it can still be read, rather than trying to force it into Tanqory.
- Export the orders from your old platform before you close the account, and keep the CSV. It is your record of what was sold, to whom, and for how much.
- Keep it for reference and reporting. Historic revenue lives in that export and in your accounts, not in Tanqory's reports, so a year-on-year comparison spanning the move has to be read across both.
- Recreate only what you must. If an order still needs work in Tanqory, for example something that has not shipped yet, build that one as a draft order rather than trying to bring the whole history across.
- Bring the customers across instead. Customers do have an importer, so a returning shopper can exist in Tanqory with their details even though their old orders do not. See Add and Import Customers.
Getting orders out of Tanqory
The direction that does work is export. The Orders page can write your orders to a CSV for accounting, reporting, or your own records, which is covered in Export Orders to CSV.
Common mistakes
- Planning a migration that assumes past orders come across with the products and customers, and only discovering at cut-over that they do not.
- Closing an old platform account before exporting its orders, which leaves no copy of the history anywhere.
- Rebuilding hundreds of historic orders as drafts, which takes days and produces orders that were never really placed in Tanqory.
- Expecting Tanqory's reports to cover trading from before the move.
